What is a Neck Lift?

A neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that rejuvenates the neck’s appearance by removing excess skin, tightening underlying muscles, and recontouring the neck area. It addresses common issues such as “turkey neck,” vertical banding, and fatty accumulations. The result is a smoother, firmer, and more youthful neckline.

Why is a Neck Lift Surgery Done?

Over time, factors like aging, sun exposure, genetics, and gravity can contribute to the skin’s sagging, formation of wrinkles, and loss of muscle tone in the neck. A neck lift can provide solutions to:

  • Improve visible signs of aging.
  • Address fat deposits under the chin.
  • Reduce or eliminate muscle banding in the neck.
  • Restore a smoother, firmer neck profile.

How It’s Done

In a neck lift, the patient and surgeon begin with a detailed consultation, discussing desired outcomes, potential risks, and the most appropriate surgical techniques. On the day of the procedure, the surgeon administers either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia to ensure the patient’s comfort. The surgeon then makes the incisions, choosing between the traditional pattern starting at the hairline and circling the ear, or the limited incision approach which is smaller and wraps behind the ear.

The surgeon sculpts or redistributes any excess or misplaced fat and tightens the sagging platysma muscle, essential for addressing the ‘turkey neck’ appearance. He or she then stretches the skin, which has lost its elasticity over the years, and trims any excess. After achieving the desired neck contour, the surgeon closes the incisions using advanced methods to reduce scarring. Once the surgery concludes, the surgeon might place a bandage around the neck to support its new shape and provides specific care instructions before discharging the patient.

Neck Lift Recovery and What to Expect

Undergoing a neck lift is a transformative experience, and the healing process comprises several phases:

Immediate Post-Operative Phase (1-2 weeks):

After the surgery, patients typically experience some level of discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the neck area. Surgical dressings will be applied to the incision areas to facilitate healing. Temporary drains may be placed beneath the skin to remove excess fluid or blood.

Mid Recovery Phase (3-6 weeks):

As healing progresses, the initial discomfort will subside. However, patients should remain cautious, avoiding excessive neck movements and strenuous activities. Wearing a special supportive neck garment might be recommended to manage swelling and provide support.

Long-Term Recovery:

Over the next several months, patients will notice a gradual refinement in the contour and appearance of the neck. While a significant portion of the healing occurs during the initial weeks, subtle changes, and final settling of the tissues may continue up to 6 months post-surgery.

Final Results:

By the 6th to 12th month, most patients will have fully realized the results of their neck lift. Though scars from the incisions are permanent, they will become less noticeable over time, particularly with diligent care and following the surgeon's guidance.
Potential complications can include scarring, nerve injury, and adverse reactions to anesthesia. Scheduling and attending regular post-operative check-ups with the surgeon will optimize healing and address any concerns promptly.
