Excess Skin or Fat Deposits

This term can encompass two different conditions:

1. Lipedema

Lipedema is a chronic condition characterized by abnormal fat deposition, typically in the legs and sometimes the arms. This fat is resistant to weight loss through diet and exercise and can cause pain, swelling, and tenderness. It primarily affects women but can occur in men.

Causes: The exact cause of lipedema is unknown, but it’s thought to be a combination of genetic predisposition and hormonal factors.

Treatment Options: There is no cure for lipedema, but treatment focuses on managing symptoms and improving quality of life. This may include compression garments, manual lymphatic drainage therapy, and specific dietary changes. In severe cases, liposuction surgery can be considered.

2. Skin Laxity

Skin laxity simply refers to loose or sagging skin. This can be a natural part of aging, but can also be caused by significant weight loss, sun damage, or genetics.

Causes: Collagen and elastin are proteins that provide skin with structure and elasticity. As we age, production of these proteins decreases, leading to looser skin. Rapid weight loss can also cause skin to stretch and lose its elasticity. Sun exposure damages collagen and elastin, accelerating skin laxity.

Treatment Options: Treatment options for skin laxity vary depending on the severity and desired outcome. Non-surgical options include topical creams, laser treatments, and radiofrequency therapy. Surgical options like a facelift, body lift, or tummy tuck can be considered for more significant laxity.
